Round Table


This Climate Talk will bring together the youngest generations of three wine families from various countries. Haley, Franz and Rob have embraced the passion and business of their predecessors. They will share with our community what they are bringing into the business, as representatives of a new breed, a new mindset, in the decade where acting on climate has become a question of survival.

Rob Symington

Director at Symington Family Estates . PT

Rob is a Director at Symington Family Estates – a leading premium Port and Portuguese wine producer. He is a member of the 5th generation of Symingtons to produce Port and wine in Portugal. His responsibilities span Communications, Sustainability, People & Culture, and Commercial Strategy. In 2019 Rob led the team that achieved B Corporation status for Symington, becoming the first wine company in Portugal to take this step and commit to the highest standards of ethical business practices, and social and environmental performance. The family are deeply concerned about the threat of climate change and - as members of International Wineries for Climate Action – are working on a comprehensive plan to reduce their carbon emissions, as well as conducting pioneering R&D to adapt to the impacts of climate change in the vineyard. In January 2020 they launched The Symington Impact Fund to provide financial support for organisations addressing social and environmental issues in the regions where they work. Before joining his family business, Rob worked in London for 10 years – starting his career in business consulting with Ernst & Young before co-founding and building Escape the City - a business that helps professionals make meaningful career changes in pursuit of work that matters to them and to the world.


Haley Duncan

Safety & Sustainability Manager at Silver Oak Cellars & Twomey Cellars

Haley Duncan is a third-generation vintner from Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars. Haley’s grandfather, Ray Duncan, co-founded Silver Oak in the early 70’s and her father, Tim Duncan has worked at the wineries for over 30 years. After graduating from Skidmore College in 2013 with a degree in Environmental Studies, Haley moved back to California to learn the family business first-hand, working in the vineyards, cellars and customer service department. She then became Project Manager for construction of the new Alexander Valley winery in Healdsburg specializing in sustainability. Haley has applied her studies to help achieve the first LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge (LBC) certifications for new construction in the wine business. During construction of the new winery, she also led sustainability initiatives at Silver Oak’s Oakville winery which became the first existing building certified LEED Platinum in July 2016.


Franz Wehrheim

Junior Manager at Wehrheim Winery . Germany

Franz Wehrheim went to school in Germany and the USA and first studied business administration in Mannheim and Lisbon before beginning his dual studies in viticulture and oenology. After studying viticulture, he completed a Master of Business Administration in the field of viticulture, sustainability and sales. Franz Wehrheim joined the company in 2013 and today runs it together with his father. He also inherited the Wehrheim gene and has a clear vision about viniculture. He actively maintains the focus on Riesling, white Burgundy and Pinot Noir. In his opinion sustainability and quality are closely connected in the wine world.


Beatriz Machado

Wine Director at The Yeatman Hotel . PT

Wine Director at The Fladgate Partnership, Beatriz is also a Master of Sciences in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California at Davis, USA. Before engaging in the Wine Hospitality venture, Beatriz has been constantly challenged and successfully accomplished several projects, in Portugal and abroad with focus on sensory analysis of wines. Her passion for wines and her belief that quality Portuguese wines need to be introduced and promoted to a global audience led her to accept the challenge to be the first Wine Director of a 5-star wine hotel in Portugal and join The Yeatman team. Since June 2010, Beatriz has selected and now oversees a 40,000-bottle wine cellar, which stocks the world’s most comprehensive collection of Portuguese table wines and Ports. Beatriz has created over 350 wine events; managed over 100 wine partnerships and trained a, now, wine specialized staff at The Fladgate Partnerhship. Under her guidance, The Yeatman Hotel won several wine awards, under which, the most important for “Best Regional Wine List in the World” by the World of Fine Wine Magazine. Since June 2017 Beatriz has started to work on the World of Wine cultural complex - the place to learn about Portuguese wine and position Portugal in the world. This emblematic project of The Fladgate Partnerhsip needs Beatriz’s focus by creating content and managing the Wine Experience (3.000m2) and Wine School to open to public in 2020.
