Quinta do Portal is a family winery based in the Douro valley. The base for the foundation of Quinta do Portal was a Port wine estate (Quinta dos Muros) that has been in the family since 1881.
Quinta do Portal first bottlings were from 1994 and included for the first time a portfolio of still Douro wines. We also produce fortified Moscatel.
Our goal has always been to delivery pleasure and enjoyment to our customers in a balanced relation between the social, economic and natural environment.
Among the philosophies that guide us are the following:
- Bottle grapes. With this we intend to have the least intervention possible at the winery, respecting in full what nature has delivered in the form of grapes;
- Bring the garden to the vineyard and vice-versa. There must be a natural balance between the vineyards and the surrounding environment. The “bordadura” olive groves, the Mediterranean forest and all the flora and fauna that populate around, in a spirit of true biodiversity.
In our restaurant kitchen, Chef Milton Ferreira, who has been with us since 2009, tries to use as much as possible the season vegetables, fruits and flowers from our own kitchen garden.
Our guest house won a Best of Wine Tourism award for Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices (2009) and the Green Key eco label every year since 2010 (with the exception of 2016)
Paulo Coutinho is our winemaker since 1994, and explores his own organic vineyard.
