Escudial – Dão is Emotion
The way how wine industry grows depends primarily on the sustainable choices made by producers
Quinta do Escudial is a family-owned company located near Seia, a small town at the foot of Serra da Estrela, the highest land mountain in Portugal. Belonging to the wine region of Dão and located in a region that also has an incredibly old grazing activity, the influence of wine production as an element of socio-environmental sustainability aims to be entirely linked to the use of wine-growing practices using local traditions.
A viticulture with a lot of manual intervention with a minimal oenology marked by the rustic character of its inhabitants. Both retired, José, a former electrical engineer, and his wife, Estefânia a teacher, founded the estate in 2003 and led Quinta do Escudial to invest in the exclusive production of wines without oak stage. They believe that aesthetically this is the way that comes closest to their roots and the surrounding environment.
“If we capture the elements of a painting and decompose it into small pieces, immense qualities will emerge hidden there and not visible at first glance. It is up to us, vignerons, to have the ability to recognize them and present them in liquid form, without any transformation.”
