Alain Deloire earned a PhD from the University of Montpellier II in 1982 and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Montpellier I in 1998. He began his career in the wine industry as a researcher and team leader in viticulture at Moët & Chandon in Champagne, France, where he worked for ten years.

He later became Professor of Grapevine and Fruit Ecophysiology at L’Institut Agro in Montpellier, France. Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University in South Africa and chaired the Department of Viticulture and Oenology from 2011 to 2012. From 2013 to 2016, he was Director of the National Wine and Grape Industry Centre at Charles Sturt University in Australia, where he also acted as Director of Research in 2015. He later returned to L’Institut Agro in 2016 and was appointed Adjunct Research Professor at Charles Sturt University from 2017 to 2023.

Dr. Deloire has made major contributions to viticulture research, including two patented inventions and more than 250 scientific and industry publications, as well as three co-authored books on grapevine physiology and terroir. In 2019, he was recognized among the 20 most influential figures in the French wine sector. Since retiring from L’Institut Agro in 2023, he has continued his work as an international viticulture consultant.
